The Royal Society of Canada (RSC) and Massey College are thrilled to present the first installment of the RSC Dialogues @ Massey series, Working Together to Improve the Health and Well-Being of the Elderly.
Alain Noël and Carole Estabrooks are featured in this Dialogue, which will be moderated by Nathalie Des Rosiers, Principal of Massey College.
The UN Decade of Healthy Aging (2021-2030) is seeking “to reduce health inequities and improve the lives of older people, their families and communities through collective action.”
While healthy aging is a major challenge in Canada and globally, children and youth are also confronting significant issues and barriers to health and well-being. This Dialogue will explore the issues confronting the aging population including how these are exacerbated by poverty, racism and the social determinants of physical and mental health more broadly.
Speakers will then discuss initiatives with the potential to synergistically benefit the well-being and well-becoming of these groups through enhancing their agentic capabilities and opportunities for social engagement. The event will include a discussion with attendees.

Carole Estabrooks, Professor, Faculty of Nursing, University of Alberta, Chair of the RSC Working Group on Long-Term Care
Dr. Estabrooks is the scientific director of the Translating Research in Elder Care program and a professor in the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Alberta. Dr Estabrooks' research focuses on quality of care, quality of life and quality of end of life for older adults living in LTC, and on LTC workforce quality of work life.
Alain Noël, professeur, Département de science politique, Université de Montréal
Alain Noël is professor of political science at the Université de Montréal. He works on social policy in a comparative perspective, as well as on federalism and on Quebec and Canadian politics. He has published in a number of books and scientific journals, including the American Political Science Review, the Canadian Journal of Political Science, and Comparative Political Studies. His latest book is entitled Utopies provisoires: essais de politique sociale (Montréal: Québec Amérique, 2019).

Nathalie Des Rosiers, Principal, Massey College
Nathalie Des Rosiers is the Principal of Massey College, Professor at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law, and a Senior Fellow of Trinity College. From 2016 -2019, she was the MPP representing the riding of Ottawa-Vanier and Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry (2018). Prior to politics, she was Dean of Law, Common Law, University of Ottawa (2013-2016), General Counsel of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association (2009-2013), Vice-President, Governance, University of Ottawa (2008-2009), Dean of Law, Civil Law ( 2004-2008) and President of the Law Commission of Canada (2000-2004).
