Our Vision In Action
Implementing a global vision must begin locally. The RSC regional chapter model integrates Fellows,
community members, students and institutional members by:
- Enhancing public awareness of RSC and of the Extending Excellence campaign;
- Assisting in the design, implementation and stewardship of regional programs and partnerships;
- Stewarding the institutional membership in the region;
- Increasing the number of nominations submitted for Fellowship and Awards from the region.
RSC - Atlantic

Donald Savoie, FRSC
The Steering Committee for Atlantic Canada (SC-A) has been integrating RSC into the regular cycle of academic activity.
- The committee has undertaken the planning of a major RSC conference in the region in 2010, entitled “Atlantic Canada: Reappraising the Past and Looking to the Future.”
- This fall, an ambitious high school outreach program will pair Fellows of RSC with outstanding scholars in the region.
- Several new Atlantic regional scholarship programs are in development.
SC-A members:
Donald Savoie (Chair), Françoise Baylis (Dalhousie University), Gwendolyn
Davies (University of New Brunswick), Sandra Irving (Chair, RSC President’s
Advisory Council), Patrick McGrath (Dalhousie University and IWK Hospital), and
John Reid (Saint Mary’s University).
Throughout the 2008/2009 academic year, Fellows of RSC visited over 1,500 high school students and seven
institutional members in support of the establishment of the regional chapter.
Dr. Patricia Demers, Past-President of RSC, off ered public lectures at
Saint Mary’s University in Halifax and at the University of New
Brunswick (Saint John), and spoke with high school students about
the importance of higher education.
Dr. Sherrill Grace, past-president of Academy I, delivered public lectures
at Mount Allison (pictured) and the University of New Brunswick. Dr.
Grace also visited with several hundred high school students.
At Fredericton High School (pictured) Dr. Mona Nemer, MSRC (VP
Research at the University of Ottawa) visited with over 500 students
to share obstacles and opportunities confronting women who wish to
pursue a career in science.
Dr. Nemer also visited Acadia University (pictured), where she met with
the Women in Science Committee.
Dr. Constance Backhouse, FRSC of the University of Ottawa, delivered a
public lecture at Dalhousie University in support of the establishment of
the regional chapter.
The chapter model begun in Atlantic Canada is the way for RSC to implement its vision locally and globally. Our
vision in action will be illustrated by the 2010 conference on the place of Atlantic Canada within our country and
in the world.
