James Allan Evans, Professor Emeritus, The University of British Columbia, has published his book entitled The Power Game in Byzantium: Antonina and the Empress Theodora. It reveals the politics that went on in the court of Justinian in the sixth century, the age of Justinian, a period when East and West parted company in theology and ideology, and the extent to which this parting was a deliberate choice.

The Ethical Debate offers a wide-ranging exploration of how we might think systematically and deeply about this fundamental aspect of human life. Written from a feminist perspective, the book emphasizes the inevitably gendered nature of the decision; although both men and women must ponder the issue, the choice has different meanings, implications, and risks for women than it has for men.

Patrick McGrath, Vice President Research, IWK Health Centre and Professor of Psychology, Pediatrics and Psychiatry, Canada Research Chair at Dalhousie University was awarded the Logan Wright Distinguished Research Award from the American Psychological Association, Division 54, the Society of Pediatric Psychology, for excellence and significant contributions in establishing the scientific base of pediatric psychology at the recent American Psychological Association meeting in San Diego. McGrath is known for his work on pain in children and innovative delivery of mental health care in children.

Peter Suedfeld, University of British Columbia, was elected as a full Member of the International Academy of Astronautics, based on his research on the psychological effects of spaceflight (promoted from Corresponding Member). He was also elected a Fellow International of the Explorers Club, based on both his space research and field research in the Antarctic and Canadian High Arctic.

Dan Brooks, University of Toronto, has been awarded a Senior Visiting Fellowship at the Collegium Budapest from October 2010-July 2011. He will be collaborating with Permanent Fellow Prof. Eors Szathmary, working on fundamental theory in evolutionary biology.
Wagdi George Habashi, McGill University, was hosted by the Aerospace Industries Association of Canada (AIAC) for his exceptional contribution to Canada's aerospace industry – and bestowed upon him the very first AIAC-James C. Floyd Award – as part of the AIAC Annual General Meeting and Conference Oct. 26 and 27 in Ottawa.
Bryce Kendrick, is pleased to announce the release of a book entitled The Genera of Hyphomycetes, by Seifert, Morgan-Jones, Gams and Kendrick. (Centraalbureau voor Schimmelcultures Fungal Biodiversity Centre, Netherlands, 2011, ISBN-10: 0888640382 ISBN-13: 978-0888640383). This 1000-page book is a comprehensive revision of the classic 1980 text by Carmichael, Kendrick, Conners and Sigler, with entirely new illustrations and descriptions of more than 1400 genera. Numerous photomicrographs, a series of keys, and a comprehensive index of connections established between the sexual and asexual manifestations of these fungi are also incorporated.
Shrawan Kumar, University of North Texas Health Science Center, was invested an Officer of the Order of Canada in November 2010.
David J. Lockwood received the 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award of the Canadian Semiconductor Science and Technology Conference (CSST), which was held in Vancouver in August 2011. Dr. Lockwood was cited, "in recognition of over 40 years of outstanding contributions to the generation and dissemination of knowledge related to materials science as revealed by optical spectroscopy." In accepting the award, Dr. Lockwood remarked that he strongly believed that this award, in being given to a National Research Council of Canada (NRC) scientist, more appropriately recognized the substantial contributions of NRC staff to semiconductor research and development in Canada over the last 25 years.
Lawrence Mysak, McGill University, became CSL Emeritus Professor on June 1 2010. In recognition of his research, teaching and administrative contributions to McGill for the past 24 years, he was an inaugural recipient of the McGill University Medal for "Exceptional Academic Achievement", which was awarded at the McGill Science Convocation on May 31, 2010. Also, in June 2010, at the 44th Annual Congress of the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society in Ottawa, Professor Mysak was honoured with the "Mysak Session on Ocean and Climate Dynamics".
